Alternative futures on RTV
On Thursday, July 4, 2024, TV SLO 1 aired a new show Conversations about the Future with the subtitle Alternative Futures, in which three guests reflected on the dilemmas and opportunities of an increasingly digitized society. In addition to Dr. Maja Bogataj Jančič from ODIPI, were also anthropologists Dr. Dan Podjed from ZRC SAZU and computer engineer Dr. Blaž Zupan from the Faculty of Computer Science and Informatics UL.
The guests discussed algorithms and digital twins, that artificial intelligence should only be a tool, feelings towards artificial intelligence in different generations and cultures and the limitation of the use of smart technology in schools, as social networks make us antisocial beings. But since we will not be able to escape artificial intelligence in the future, we should start educating ourselves about the pitfalls and advantages of new technologies and approach new problems in a more interdisciplinary manner. Among other things, Dr. Bogataj Jančič emphasized that: “Artificial intelligence brings many opportunities, but it must not be just a business. It must work for the good of humanity and the planet,” therefore its regulation is necessary and the EU AI Act is a step in the right direction. This Act showed that in Europe we still want to live in a society where human rights and privacy protection will be respected and where higher, more binding standards will be set regarding the regulation of artificial intelligence elsewhere. In addition, a few years ago, a European directive introduced two exemptions for text and data mining, which can prepare the environment for the legal creation of artificial intelligence. In the show, she also explicitly highlighted the importance of open science.
